Australian Tennis Star Kasatkina Announces Career Break Due to ‘Mental Stress’
The nation's leading WTA competitor has chosen to take a break until the end of the tennis calendar, admitting she is at her “mental and emotional breaking point.”
Factors Leading to the Announcement
The tennis professional, who recently changed her nationality from Russia to Australia, blamed the move for contributing to immense “emotional and mental stress.”
Additional factors involved the continued challenge of being separated from her relatives and the grueling competition calendar.
“I haven't been okay for a considerable period and, truth be told, my match outcomes and showings show it,” she wrote on her online accounts.
She continued, “Honestly, I've encountered a barrier and must stop now. I need a break. A pause from the tedious cycle of life on the tour, the travel, the outcomes, the expectations, the familiar opponents (my apologies, everyone), all aspects of this existence.”
Private Difficulties and Future Hopes
“Each person has a limit I can manage and cope with as a person, all whilst competing with the leading players in the world.”
“Should this be seen as weakness, then I accept it, I am fragile. However, I am confident in my resilience and will grow by being away, refreshing, regrouping and revitalizing. Now is the moment I paid attention to my instincts for a difference, my brain, my feelings and my physical self.”
The athlete decided to change citizenship after exiting her home country due to fears for her security, having previously criticized the government's legislation targeting LGBTQ+ individuals and the conflict in Ukraine. Originally based in Dubai, she moved to Melbourne and became a permanent resident in March.
She then announced her engagement to longtime girlfriend Natalia Zabiiako, who secured a Olympic silver for her former team at the last Winter Olympics after first representing for her birth nation Estonia.
She further mentioned she has been unable to visit her parent, who remains in Russia, for an extended period.
Tennis Journey
A major tournament contender in the past, she had ended the last four calendar years ranked in the top ten but is currently outside the top 15 after a mixed season where she won 19 and lost 21.
She is expected to exit the top 20 by the time the Australian Open begins.
The professional athlete confirmed she aims to resume in next year, “recharged and motivated,” with the build-up to her local Grand Slam probably acting as a key objective.
Industry Impact
The nation's second-ranked player is a rising star, ranked 35th globally.
Kasatkina is the most recent leading female player to end their season early, following other prominent players, amid a recent trend of competitors stopping mid-game.
The tour governing body obligates elite athletes to appear at a set number of tournaments, featuring the four grand slams, top-tier competitions, and additional WTA events.
But world No. 2 a leading athlete commented recently, “There's no way to squeeze it in the calendar. Maybe I will have to choose some competitions and miss them, although they are required.
“It's essential to plan wisely about it - perhaps ignoring about the regulations and just consider what's good for us.”
