Live Match Coverage
21 mins: Intense Play as Both Teams Compete
21 mins: The Broncos push forward to the midfield and almost break through the opposition defense through Walsh and Shibasaki on the left side. Another superb kick from Reynolds on the last tackle maintains the Broncos' momentum. For three tackles they remain on the front foot, but some quick passes release the rapid Hughes, and as he's tackled on the defensive 40m line, a six-again is given for holding down. Melbourne are now in rhythm, and Warbrick slices through the defense, followed by Coates making a dash – only for Walsh to catch him high with a shoulder! Could that be a yellow card? Not according to the referee, rules Atkins, because the winger was dropping low. Walsh is under review nonetheless, and Melbourne continue their attack.
19 mins: Munster Leads Storm Attack
19th minute: Munster is busy as the Storm charge at speed down to their attacking 30m line. On the right side, Jahrome Hughes kicks high, Eliesa Katoa sprints forward, but in the aerial battle, the forward loses the ball, and Brisbane at last get a respite.
18th Minute: Melbourne Apply Pressure on Brisbane
18 mins: Melbourne perform a textbook restart set and put plenty of pressure on Deine Mariner with the final kick. Once more, the Brisbane fail to reach near halfway in response, and Adam Reynolds is compelled to kick long to stay in the game.
17 mins: Setback for Storm
17 mins: It’s not all good news for the Storm. Jack Howarth has been subbed out due to a groin issue. Wishart is on in his place.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Melbourne 12-6 Brisbane (Eliesa Katoa, 15)
Spectacular, absolutely stunning. Following consecutive set restarts, the Broncos are flagging. From tackle three close to the line on the left side, Melbourne move the ball infield for two passes before Jahrome Hughes drops the ball onto his toe and the onrushing Eliesa Katoa times his run to perfection to pounce on the bobbling ball and stand to mark his side's second touchdown!
From slightly right of the posts, Nick Meaney converts his second goal.
12 mins: Storm Show Thrilling Attack
12th minute: Melbourne look dynamic in attack. There’s speed from the ruck, power from the pack, and crisp hands from the outside players. A dangerous attack concludes with a high kick to the left corner that is knocked on by Reece Walsh and results in a infringement to the Melbourne for an escort on Coates. Melbourne reject the penalty goal and get to work near the goalposts. There’s a six again – and a further one – as Munster dances side to side.
10 mins: Tense Action
10th minute: Stefano Utoikamanu has lived up to his word early and his carry from the kickoff allows Harry Grant, then Ryan Papenhuyzen, to snipe from acting half. Jahrome Hughes boots from 40 meters and Reece Walsh secures the high kick on his 10-meter line. The Broncos show less penetration in this set and get fortunate on the final play when Ben Hunt's pass to Reynolds is dropped. Not to worry, the experienced playmaker kicks superbly to turn Coates around and forces the Storm winger to run from his in-goal. The Brisbane are overzealous with their chase, catching the Queenslander with a high tackle, and Storm can kick for attacking field position.
CONVERTED TRY! Melbourne 6-6 Broncos (Nick Meaney, 8)
After the scrum, Utoikamanu drives hard to the 20m line. Then, from quick ball from the play-the-ball, every key Storm player get a touch as they move it out to the right edge until Meaney cuts inside, runs at an angle at serious pace, and carves through a flimsy defensive line to dive over for an immediate response!
The centre recovers to add the conversion. It's a tied game!
7 mins: Both Sides Trade Possession
7 mins: Both sides exchange conservative sets around halfway, but then the Broncos look to expand on their left, only to be unable to hit Gehamat Shibasaki with the ball. William Warbrick advances quickly and earns a knock on for his troubles.
5th Minute: Dream Start for Brisbane
5th minute: This marks the absolute dream start for Brisbane, taking the lead before the Storm have even handled the ball, in an attack dominated by both Payne Haas and Reece Walsh. The Storm might feel a little aggrieved at Grant Atkins blowing such an quick infringement, but they were soundly opened by the rapid Brisbane offense.
SUCCESSFUL TRY! Storm 0-6 Broncos (Mariner, 3)
Following a long kick, Brisbane begin their attack. Melbourne concede a set restart for offside, and quickly the ball is in the danger area. Where is Walsh? Waiting on the right edge, attracting Howarth, holding his position, then someway passing to Mariner on his outside. The winger cuts infield, crosses the try line, then just, only just remains in the field of play as he moves to score under the posts.
There’s a delay before Adam Reynolds kicks the conversion, but the Bunker confirms the on-field decision. The venue is erupting to the sound of jubilant fans.
2 mins: Quick Penalty
2 mins: Corey Jensen, not Payne Haas, takes the initial carry of the match and the Storm are quick to tackle… but only a few plays later the Melbourne concede the first penalty of the game for Harry Grant impeding Haas on the floor. Brisbane immediately in offensive mode.
