The former director has asserted his non-guilt concerning the allegations

Former FBI chief James Comey has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

His lawyer filed the plea representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer announced he would seek to have the legal matter terminated for various factors including that his client, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was charged just days after Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Court Developments

At the proceedings on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative informed the judge they intended to submit various petitions to throw out the proceedings before a legal hearing, stating the government's case was vindictive and that a US attorney was wrongfully designated to handle the case.

The former director's case was originally overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under pressure from Trump after his investigation into another political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

The former director appeared in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and making jokes. He was joined by his spouse, Patrice Failor and child Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration dismissed.

Following the reading to the magistrate recite his legal protections and the two counts against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was inquired if he comprehended the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he told the proceedings.

Background Context

James Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about several months into Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the moment, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

While in office, Mr Comey caused a negative reaction from Democrats when he stated just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Clinton were never brought, causing negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys assert the former director lied to the legislature during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he provided false information to the Senate by stating he had not authorized an individual at the agency to release to news outlets data about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also charge the defendant of "wrongfully trying to affect, hinder and slow" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media Mr Comey posted to his social media after he was charged, he said he was innocent and alleged the former president of behaving like a "dictator".

"We have understood for a long time that there are ramifications to standing up to the former president," he stated. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The accusations against Mr Comey surfaced after Donald Trump published on online platforms insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, take legal action against the former director and additional individuals.
