Student Society President-Elect Removed Following Conservative Activist Comments
The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against George Abaraonye reached the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to celebrate the killing of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while addressing a university in Utah.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The president-elect is also reported to have written in a messaging group with other members appearing to welcome the incident.
Election Results
The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with outcomes announced on Tuesday.
Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The announcement confirmed that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in following the society's regulations.
Procedural Disputes
Proceedings were temporarily halted early on Monday after the election official was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a statement, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the vote tally had been halted because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His statement categorically refuted that any representative acting for George had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The student stated that significant concerns had been submitted to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.
His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Critics have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Reactions
On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.
The message criticized the society of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a ideological rival".
The communication indicated that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".
The society had earlier condemned the student's comments after Kirk's death and stated that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with the activist at the society in May.
